Hats, like so many things of the past, persist but only recreationally or as a luxury or status symbol. For example, young men and women often wear baseball hats when not working. Another example of this is the horse, which never really went away but became a luxury recreational vehicle rather than a utilitarian one. Other examples include, hardcover books, vinyl records, gas-lit stoves. All of these persist but only in recreation or as a kind of luxury product.
